Glasgow was chosen to stage the Games on the 9 November 2007 following an impressive bid by the Games partners - the Scottish Government, Glagow City Council and Commonwealth Games Scotland.

The Glasgow 2014 bid described the people, place and passion Scotland and Glasgow would bring to hosting the Games. The bid included:

  • detailed plans for world-class venues, accommodation and transport

  • a commitment to sustainability as a key part of all elements of Games planning

  • evidence of strong political and financial commitment from national and local government

  • proof of overwhelming community support

  • a passionate belief in the importance of the legacy of the Games for Glasgow and Scotland.

Glasgow is an extraordinary city, in one of the most spectacular and sport hungry countries in the world. Our passion for competition and respect for the Commonwealth Games is shown by the fact that we have taken part in every Games since they were established in 1930.

We will make these games the greatest sporting event our country has ever seen. They will be our chance to show the whole world the very best of Scotland.

Glasgow has shown enormous professionalism in putting the bid together and we are very confident that they will back that up now with a strong organising committee and one that recognises the necessary partnerships required in making the Games a success...Our evaluation commission came away very impressed with the plans Glasgow have for the Games...People of Glasgow are passionate about their sport. We know we will get good spectator support across all events and we are very confident that the Games in Glasgow will attract the necessary commercial support as well.

I just wish I was a 16-year-old again. There are kids out there now who will be watching the news and this successful bid will give them the motivation to make them want to represent Scotland at the 2014 Games.
